About
Hello, I am Dr. M. Chandran, currently serving as the Professor and Head of the Department of Zoology. My journey into the fascinating world of research began during my Ph.D. in Zoology at Annamalai University. Throughout my academic and professional career, I have been driven by a deep passion for exploring natural products and their potential applications in medicine.
My research has primarily focused on the screening and extraction of bioactive compounds from various natural sources. I have extensively worked with techniques such as Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) for Phytochemical Analysis, as well as Compound Isolation and Phytochemical Purification. These methods have been essential in identifying and isolating potent compounds, paving the way for advancements in Natural Product Drug Discovery.
The journey into understanding natural products has been both rewarding and challenging. Over the years, I have worked with various techniques, including Soxhlet Extraction, Fractionation, and Paper Chromatography, to ensure precise purification of plant-based compounds. My research has extended to assessing the biological activities of these compounds, particularly focusing on Antioxidant, Antibacterial, and Hepatoprotective properties, which hold immense therapeutic potential.
A significant portion of my work has been rooted in the field of Ethnopharmacology and Ethnomedicine. I have always been fascinated by traditional medicine and its application in modern science. By integrating indigenous knowledge with advanced scientific methods, I have sought to contribute to the understanding of how these natural remedies can be harnessed to develop modern pharmaceuticals. My work in this area has been instrumental in identifying herbal medicines and nutraceuticals that possess high bioactivity and therapeutic potential.
Additionally, my research has delved into the realm of Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, where I have conducted extensive studies on the pharmacological screening of natural compounds. Physicochemical analysis has further helped in understanding the underlying mechanisms of action, thereby advancing the field of pharmacological research.
As a researcher and mentor, my goal has always been to contribute to the advancement of science while promoting the integration of traditional medicinal knowledge with modern techniques. I continue to lead research initiatives in the department, guiding scholars and fostering a spirit of curiosity and innovation.
This has been my journey so far, and I look forward to contributing more to the fields of Zoology, Natural Product Chemistry, and Pharmacology.
