About
Dr. Jinendiran Sekar is a Research Scientist, Division of Infectious Diseases, The Lundquist Institute, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center who joined the Swidergall Lab in June 2023. He received his Ph.D. in Biotechnology from Madurai Kamaraj University, India, where his research focused on the effects of dietary probiotics on host immunity and resistance to bacterial infections, as well as the identification of novel anticancer and anti-inflammatory molecules derived from probiotic bacteria. He completed his postdoctoral training at the Division of Inflammation and Immunity, Lerner Research Institute, Cleveland Clinic, USA, where he investigated metabolic perturbations and their contribution to sarcopenia in conditions such as hyperammonemia and alcohol-associated liver disease. Dr. Sekar is passionate about translating scientific discoveries into therapeutic strategies for patients with chronic metabolic diseases. He has a strong curiosity about the intersection of immunometabolism and mucosal immunity, particularly during mucosal fungal infections. His long-term research goal is to develop a detailed mechanistic understanding of metabolic regulation in mucosal immunity in the context of diabetes-associated infectious complications. Ultimately, he aims to develop targeted therapies to reduce infection risk and improve the quality of life for people living with diabetes.
