About
My Ph.D. research focused on designing and characterization of bioactive composite and hybrid coatings to tailor the biodegradability of Mg alloys for orthopedic implant applications. My research thoroughly investigates the fabrication of novel multi-layered organic(PCL, PLGA, PA)/ inorganic (HA, TiO2) coating architectures using non-solvent to solvent induced phase separation (NIPS), Polymer induced liquid precursor (PILP), Anodization, Sol-gel, and Chemical conversion coating techniques.
I have extensive experience towards wide range of characterization techniques including structural characterization: SEM/EDX/TEM/FTIR/XRD; Electrochemical characterization: PDP/EIS/CV/ Reaction kinetics using EECs (equivalent electric circuits);Thermal characterization: DSC/DTA/TGA; Wetting characterization: Contact Angles (CAs)/Drop Sliding velocities (DSVs); Microhardness: Vickers/ Rockwell; Coating adhesion strength: 3D scratch tester/Tape test; ; In-vitro degradation behaviour: Degradation rate/H2 evolution rate; Mechanical characterization: Three-point bend test/Tensile test/Compression test/Fracture toughness; Fractography: EBSD; In-vitro cell-viability: ELISA/MTT assay; Antibacterial behaviour: Confocal/Fluorescence microscopy/ XTT assay.
I have developed the self-healing mechanisms in coatings and built smart PCL microcapsules functionalized with a natural polymer as a healing agent. Combining double emulsification and phase evaporation techniques created a unique honeycomb core matrix. The experimental settings provide a rational design for multiple stimuli-feedback based self-healing coatings, including self-healing response against mechanical scratching, rapid pH rise, and abundant release of Mg2+ in test media. Burst, Fickian, and Non-Fickian diffusion-based release phenomena have all been explored using a variety of drug release kinetic models.
As a part of my research, I developed a unique HA-TiO2 nano-channeled coating for biomimetic Ca-P mineralization. The coating has a unique ability to mineralize apatite crystals with a particular orientation for deep penetration inside collagen fibrils of bone, promoting intrafibrillar mineralization and improving osseointegration response.
