Dr. Sanjay Basak graduated in Biochemistry (PhD) with a specialization in Molecular Biology. Dr. Basak completed his postdoctoral training at the Faculty of Medicine, the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, and the University of Oslo, Norway. Dr. Basak recognized as World's top 2% scientists in 2025 by Stanford University, with the highest overall rank among ICMR-NIN scientists;
Dr. Basak is a skilled and independent researcher.Dr. Basak started his research career at the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). He brings over 20 years of research experience in developmental biology, metabolism, endocrine disrupting chemicals and nutrigenomics and has produced more than 100 publications, including original research, review papers, methodological studies, book chapters, edited books, and monographs. The h-index is 31 (Google Scholar).
Presently, Dr.Basak serves ICMR-NIN as 'Scientist F-Senior Deputy Director'. Dr. Basak's group investigates the roles of nutraceuticals derived from dietary factors on early-life development and its prevention of the development of adult chronic diseases. His groups also investigate the impact of lifestyle and environmental factors on fetoplacental development. He is certified as a FELASA-C (The Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations) fellow to conduct laboratory animal experiments . Their research utilizes models of rats and mice, human cells and cell lines, clinical samples, and molecular diagnostic methods. Besides guiding young researchers in their MSc and PhD programmes, Dr Basak is involved in academic and organizational activities within the Institute and Council.
Best Research Scholar Award of ICMR-NIN, India for the year 2024; EMBO travel grant and invited Mini poster for the research "Development exposure to endocrine activating compound" at 22nd European Testis Workshop 2023, Montreux, Switzerland; Smt. Swaran Kanta Dingley Oration Award from the Indian Council of Medical Research in 2018 for his outstanding research contribution to Reproductive Biology. He is a recipient of the Human Resource Development Fellowship Grant and honour by the Department of Health Research, Govt. of India, 2016. He received the Henrik Homans Memorial Scholarship from the University of Oslo, Norway 2011. Dr. Basak received the BOYSCAST (Better Opportunities for Young Scientists in Chosen Areas of Science & Technology) Fellowship Grant and Award from the Dept. of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, 2010. Dr. Basak received a Research & Development Grant from the Dept. of Biotechnology, Govt. of India in Human Development & Disease Biology (2013-17). He received a start-up grant from the Dept. of Health Research, Govt. of India (2018-23), and ICMR research grant, Govt. of India (2026-29).
Dr Basak was nominated as a Member of the National Academy of Sciences India in 2019, the Indian Society of Cell Biology in 2015, the Indian Society for the Study of Reproduction & Fertility in 2014 and the Nutrition Society of India in 2006.
Dr. Basak has been recognized as an Editorial Advisory Board member in the Journal ''Food & Function" (Impact factor 6.3), published by the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2024, and ACS Nutrition Science published by the American Chemical Society in 2025. Since 2015, Dr. Basak has been working as an editorial member of the International Journal "Food & Nutrition Research (Impact factor 4.5)", supported by the Swedish Nutrition Foundation. He served as Guest Editor for International journals such as Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids (Sep 2018), Frontiers in Physiology (January 2021), and Metabolites (March 2023). Dr. Basak is a peer reviewer for several International Journals and reviews at least 300 articles/projects annually. Dr. Basak received a top peer reviewer award from Publons, a Clarivate Analytics company, in 2019.
