For last 20 years as independent investigator, research in my laboratory has been focused upon defining multiple innovative aspects of ischemic myocardial injury and repair mechanisms including understanding the mechanisms of stem/progenitor cell based therapies, particularly those related to stem cell functions in the context of systemic inflammation, angiogenesis, diabetes, and epigenetics to understand how these stimuli may alter cardiac reparative properties of stem/progenitor cells. Additionally, over last several years, we have pioneered the studies geared towards understanding the role of extracellular vesicles including exosomes in cardiac repair and signaling as the major cell-free paracrine entity of stem/progenitor cell function as well as endogenous EVs in homoeostasis and cardiac stress. Outside the stem cell based projects, we have also developed interest in studying the role of noncoding RNAs including microRNAs and newly discovered circular-RNAs in cardiac injury and repair. Thus, my research career not only reflects mere productivity but my flexibility to adapt the innovating and emerging ideas and incorporate them into my research program. I remain committed to provide mentorship to new generation of cardiovascular scientists and have trained scores of trainees, who have received multiple awards, grant fundings including NIH RO1 while in my lab and majority of whom are now tenured faculty at various universities throughout United States or have successful career in Industry. I have requisite expertise, leadership, motivation, extensive mentoring credentials, technical know-how and administrative skills. I am continuously funded by NIH including multiple concurrently NIH funded RO1s and am PI on an ongoing Program Project Grant and have extensive experience in administering the grants.
