About

Hemant works as a senior medical scientist (Scientist F) at Division of Health Systems Research, ICMR National Institute of Epidemiology (ICMR-NIE), India. He is a medical doctor with a specialization (MD) in Community Medicine from PGIMER Chandigarh, India and a PhD (Medical Sciences) from Radboud University, The Netherlands.

Experience: Fourteen years (post MD) experience in community/public health and operational/ implementation research. This includes three years as a teaching faculty in public teaching hospitals and more than six years with an international NGO (Centre for Operational Research, The Union). He facilitates (as a senior mentor) in the WHO /TDR endorsed Structured Operational Research Training IniTiative (SORT IT) courses, regional as well as national courses. He has mentored more than 65 participants from low-middle income countries from Asia and Africa on public health program-based operational research. He has initiated more than 140 research projects, facilitated in more than 75 operational research SORT IT course modules and reviewed more than 50 manuscripts for peer-reviewed scientific journals (academic editor PLOS Global Public Health).

He has led a series of research papers on the delays and losses in the MDR-TB diagnosis and treatment pathway and on the national level assessments of active case finding for TB in project and routine implementation settings (#TBACF) in India. He has led statewide differentiated TB care models in Tamil Nadu (Tamil Nadu Kasanoi Erappila Thittam, #TNKET) and Delhi (Delhi Triage and Treat TB – #DTAT) aimed at reducing TB deaths. #TNKET has resulted in TB death reduction through a statewide differentiated TB care initiative involving triaging for severe illness at TB diagnosis.

To address priority research questions, he is currently working with states through state level operational/ implementation research projects (following a joint partnership model, for details https://sciencechronicle.in/author/hemant-d-shewade/) and through output-based operational research courses

Current Research Interests: Operational/implementation research to improve primary health care and health programs, community action for health, active case finding for TB, and differentiated TB care to reduce TB deaths.
