Dr. S.K. Varshney obtained the M.Sc. in Physics and the Ph.D in Fiber Optics (Applied Physics) degrees from Aligarh Muslim University and University of Delhi, in 1999 and 2005, respectively. He received the gold medal for standing first in M.Sc. (Physics) in 1999. He was a Monbusho research scholar (Oct. 2002-Mar. 2004), post-doctoral fellow on Center of Excellence project (Aug. 2004-Mar. 2007), and post-doctoral researcher on the Japan Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) fellowship for foreign researchers between Apr. 2007-Nov. 2008 at Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan. He is the recipient of the UGC/CSIR JRF fellowship from the Government of India (2000-2002), the Monbukagakusho scholarship from the Government of Japan (Oct. 2002-Mar. 2004), the Japanese Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) fellowship award (April 2007-Nov. 2008), and the Alexander Van Humboldt (AvH) fellowship award for post-doctoral researchers from Germany (2009). He has received DAAD fellowship under IIT-DAAD faculty exchange program. Dr. Varshney is author and co-author of more than 90 research papers in high-ranked international journals and more than 120 papers in conference proceedings.
He has joined the departments of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering and Physics at Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur in Nov. 2008 as an Assistant Professor. He was an associate professor at Dept. of E&ECE from 2016-Dec. 2022, and currently, he is a Professor in the Dept. of E&ECE. Dr. Varshney is a senior member of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). His research interests include in photonic crystal fibers, silicon photonics, nonlinear photonics, quantum photonics, THz-photonics, optical wireless communication, mid-IR photonics, fiber optic sensors and instrumentation and light-matter interaction at nano-scale.
