About

Khurram Shahzad Khan is a Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at University Hospital Hairmyres, NHS Lanarkshire, and an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow. His clinical and academic work focuses on benign biliary surgery, particularly the definitive single-stage management of bile duct stones using intraoperative cholangiography and laparoscopic common bile duct exploration.

He leads the development and outcomes evaluation of the NHS Lanarkshire single-stage bile duct stone pathway and has established pan-Lanarkshire clinical databases supporting service evaluation, quality improvement and clinically embedded research. He is Chief Investigator of the UK-BILE Collaborative, a national programme examining bile duct stone pathways, practice, training and service configuration.

His wider academic interests include surgical outcomes, patient safety, oesophagogastric disease and surgical education. He contributes nationally through roles in surgical assessment, postgraduate education, professional society leadership and collaborative research, including service as an MRCS Examiner and in leadership positions within the Surgical Research Society, The Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Society and the West of Scotland Surgical Association.
