RAKESH KUMAR
Also known as: R. Kumar
Indian Bureau of Mines, National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research
About
Dr. Rakesh Kumar is a geoscientist specializing in micropaleontology and paleoceanography, with a strong focus on past climatic reconstructions and sediment geochemistry. He earned a Ph.D. in Micropaleontology and Paleoceanography from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee in 2022, where his research explored the response of deep-sea benthic foraminifera across the Eocene-Oligocene boundary in the Southern Ocean. His work provided insights into the paleoenvironmental changes associated with the Drake Passage opening and the evolution of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.
Following his doctoral research, Dr. Kumar worked as a Project Scientist at the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), where he was involved in the study of marine sedimentary cores, utilizing sophisticated instruments e.g. IRMS for stable isotope analysis and ICP-OES for geochemistry to reconstruct past oceanic conditions.
Currently, Dr. Kumar serves as a Mining Geologist (General Central Services) with the Indian Bureau of Mines, Government of India, contributing expertise in mineral exploration, resource assessment, and regulatory compliance in the mining sector. His multidisciplinary experience in both marine and terrestrial geology enables him to approach geoscientific challenges with a comprehensive understanding of Earth's dynamic systems.
