Josephine Barnett is a distinguished Ph.D. candidate in the Sociology Department at The Graduate Center, City University of New York (CUNY) and a highly regarded Adjunct Lecturer in the Sociology Department at Queens College (CUNY). Her expertise lies in the fields of medical sociology, generational trauma, media studies, and visual sociology. She advocates for the use of visual research methods within the social sciences. Her seminal piece, "Painting a Voice," showcases the power of art - such as graffiti - in raising awareness about illnesses like AIDS and breast cancer, while also serving as a powerful tool for reclaiming public space and the bodies of those affected. This groundbreaking work earned her the prestigious Rachel Tanur Memorial Prize for Visual Sociology, funded by the Social Science Research Council.
Josephine was recently awarded the Lennihan Grant in Fall 2021 for her doctoral research in which her work delves deeper into the micro and macro sociological phenomena of generational trauma through the lens of family photographs and photo albums, illuminating their impact on the construction of collective memory and personal-collective identity. Her goal is to bring together sociological theory and visual research methodologies to demonstrate the integral role of the visual in memory battles rooted in systemic acts of violence across generations. Her work continues to be recognized and celebrated by the International Visual Sociology Association.
