About
Irene Martins holds a PhD in Ecology with a specialization in Coastal Ecology and Marine Ecosystem Modelling. She leads the Marine Ecosystem Modelling team at CIIMAR (University of Porto, Portugal), where she coordinates research on developing and applying numerical models to assess the impacts of multiple stressors—such as climate change, pollutants, plastics, and invasive species—on coastal and marine ecosystems. Her team focuses on bioenergetics and food web models to analyse the structure and functioning of marine social-ecological systems.
Her work is embedded in multidisciplinary collaborations involving modellers, ecologists, ecotoxicologists, oceanographers, and social scientists. Together, they develop integrated modelling frameworks to support Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) of marine ecosystems. Irene Martins has participated in numerous national and international R&D projects as Principal Investigator, task manager, and team member.
She supervises MSc and PhD students, as well as early career researchers (ECRs). She designs and delivers ecological modelling courses worldwide, tailored for undergraduate and graduate students, and professionals in marine and environmental sciences. Additionally, she serves as a guest editor for scientific journals and has published extensively in marine ecology and ecosystem modelling.
