About
My research career has focused on non-invasive energy-based thermal therapies for the treatment of cancer and metal implant infections. During my doctoral studies, my efforts contributed to the development and commercialization of hyperthermia cancer treatment device Neothermos, by Union Medical, South Korea. I lead the studies to develop the tissue-mimicking phantoms and patient-specific human anatomy models to characterize and validate the device for regulatory approval. Neothermos got regulatory approval from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MDFS) and the device is currently used for treating cancer patients across different medical centers in South Korea. Since my postdoctoral time in the US, I am involved in developing a new technology for treating metal implant infections (due to biofilm) using heat generated from alternating magnetic fields (AMF). I co-invented a novel AMF device for treating prosthetic joint infections and my studies provide a foundation for suitable treatment parameters using AMF to reduce biofilm. The US FDA has granted Breakthrough Device Designation to Solenic Medical in the pursuit to commercialize this technology.
