About

Dr B. Borooah Cancer Institute is the only regional cancer centre in North Eastern India. We have Population based and Hospital based cancer registry (PBCR & HBCR) in this institution. Accoding to National Cancer Registry programme, PBCR 2009-2011 report (2013), Kamrup Urban District and other North east India based PBCRs (under which Guwahati falls) have shown significantly higher age adjusted incidence rate for various cancer in men and women compared to other registries in the country.
We are focusing on the cervical cancer research in North-East Indian patients by application of low throughput molecular technologies such as Real Time PCR, FISH, PCR, Automated hybrid capture, Immunohistochemistry, MS-PCR etc. We published article and provided information about the prevalence of HPV strains in cervical cancer patients. We used first time in North Eastern region the automated hybrid capture technonology for HPV detection in healthy women. We are looking for epigenetic event such as promoter methylation. The gene expression of cell cycle, apoptosis, angiogensis, DNA repair pathway genes in cervical cancer to understand their role in cervical cancer of this region. We are looking for the association of HPV in Nasopharyngeal, Esophageal and Breast cancer as well. We are working on esophageal cancer genomics and epigenomics towards identification of potential bimarkers. We are alos working on microbiome and methylome profiling of oral cancer of North-East India. We had peer reviewed publication in esophgeal cancer epigentic and gentic markers and also in oral cancer microbiome profile.
