About
Dr. Amarendra Das is Associate Professor of Economics in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar, an autonomous institute under the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. He joined NISER in December 2015 and teaches courses in economics, including Introduction to Economics, Environmental Economics and Environmental Impact Assessment, and New Institutional Economics.
Dr. Das holds a PhD (2012) and MPhil (2006) from the Centre for Development Studies, affiliated with Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and an MA in Analytical and Applied Economics from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. Before joining NISER, he taught at Utkal University and also served as Deputy Director in the Fourteenth Finance Commission of India during 2013–14.
His research lies at the intersection of development economics, public finance, environmental economics, and regional development, with particular focus on just energy transition, tribal education, natural resource management, fiscal federalism, and regional disparity. He has published widely on these themes in leading journals and edited volumes, and his work has contributed significantly to debates on inclusive development, environmental sustainability, and policy reform in India.
Dr. Das is the Principal Investigator of the DST-Centre for Policy Research at NISER, where he leads interdisciplinary research on energy transition and sustainability. He has received several academic distinctions, including the Springer Nature Best Paper Award (2023), Best Oral Presentation Award (2021), the best paper prize from the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (2011), the Young Scientist Award (2010), and the Global Development Network Medal (2009).
Beyond academia, Dr. Das actively contributes to public policy and scholarly institutions. He served as Secretary of the Odisha Economic Association (OEA) during 2018-2025 and is serving as the member of Executive Committee, OEA since April 2025.
As per The Gazette of India notification CG-DL-E-16122025-268552, dated December 16, 2025, Dr Das is serving as a member of the State Level Expert Appraisal Committee for the State of Odisha that assists the State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority, Odisha.
