Since 1993, his scientific activity has been developing along three main lines of research: 1) Integrated multiscale Remote sensing methods in Archaeology 2) non-invasive sensing technologies and sciences for Architectural and Archaeological heritage conservation, 3) Sciences for Conservation and Architectural Restoration.
Currently, he is
 CNR Research Director of CNR-ISPC
 Director of the Italian Archaeogeophysics and Heritage Conservation Mission (ITACA) in Peru
 Professor of Fundamentals of Restoration in the School of Architecture of Univ. of Basilicata - Matera, Professor of Ancient building systems and Restoration at Master of Archaeology of Matera.
 He is the Editor in Chief and co-founder of Heritage.
In 2016-17 He has been Visiting Professor of RADI-Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing.

He authored and co-authored 390 scientific publications among which papers in international journals. chapters and volumes.
He has been guest editor of "Journal of Archaeological Science", "Journal of Cultural Heritage", "Remote Sensing", " Archaeological Prospection ", " Near Surface Geophysic", "Journal of Geophysics and Engineering", " International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation"

He chaired conferences and workshops in the field of remote sensing archaeology (EARSEL 2008; 2013), international schools (ESA school of Matera 2013, CNR school in Pompeii 2016), scientific sessions on sensing technologies for cultural heritage (EGU 2009-2016). He directed several scientific missions in Peru (archaeological sites of Nasca, Cahuachi, Ventarron, Pachacamac, Chachabamba, Machu Picchu), Colombia (Cartagena), Italia (Pompeii, cathedrals of Troia and Matera). He co-directed missions in China (archaeological sites of Luoyang, Kaifeng in Henan) and Bolivia (Tiwanaku).
He has been responsible for IBAM-CNR and ISPC-CNR of several national and international projects on Cultural Heritage management among which ByJeriNet, PRO_CULT, Athena, GeoMop, Heritage Within, and bilateral projects in the field of heritage science and cultural heritage management in China, Spain, and Colombia.
AWARDS: Winner in 2016 of CAS (Chinese Academy of Science) President's International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI); Awarded in 2017 by American Library Association's Choice Magazine Award as "Outstanding Academic Title" for the volume "Ancient Nasca World. New Insights from Science and Archeology " (Springer 2017); 2010: Certificate of public merit of the first class - Gold Medal of the National Civil Protection. Finally, he has been awarded as best paper in several conferences such as Conference RSCy 2013, EGU 2011, EGU 2012, EGU 2013.; CNR Highlights 2008-09 and 2009-10.
