About
Professor Jesus M. Cortes, Ph.D., has developed a career at the frontiers between academia, industry, and societal impact. As a Full Professor at Ikerbasque and the Head and Founder of the Computational Neuroimaging Laboratory at the BioBizkaia Health Research Institute in Bilbao, Spain, Dr. Cortes has advanced the field of computational neuroscience, brain connectivity, and clinical machine learning. His expertise is further extended through his role as a lecturer at the University of the Basque Country, where he teaches the module of Brain Connectivity and Neuroimaging within the Biomedical Engineering Master's program. With a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Granada, obtained in 2005, Dr. Cortes has enriched his theoretical and practical expertise with three postdoctoral positions across Europe and the United States. These include the Donders-Radboud University Nijmegen, the Computational Neurobiology Lab at the Salk Institute in San Diego, and the Institute for Adaptive and Neural Computation at the University of Edinburgh. In 2012, at the age of 35, Dr. Cortes founded the Computational Neuroimaging Laboratory. Recognized with the Consolidated of Excellence mention in 2017, 2021, and 2025 by the National Institute of Health Carlos III of Spain, the laboratory also achieved two Eskertxe prizes in 2018 and 2019, and BioQ award for the best Excellence Consolidated Group in 2024. Financially, Dr. Cortes has secured over 9,30 million EUR for research (including funding for personnel in the laboratory). His work has been cited 4666 times, earning him an h-index of 39. He has actively contributed to 38 research projects, leading 15 as principal investigator, and has published 137 publications, with 106 in Q1 JCR. He has delivered 131 talks across the globe in 15 different countries, evidencing the international reach of his research. Dr. Cortes's commitment to education is also high, having taught at 24 different universities in 6 countries and supervised over 40 students. His has served also as an evaluator for multiple funding agencies such as Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions, Israel Science Foundation, EPSRC-UK, BBSRC-UK, FWO-Flanders, Biomedical Engineering Panel of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Neurology Panel of the Spanish Ministry of Health. He also is Director of Research contributing to data-driven innovative technologies in www.neuronup.com, a premier cloud computing cognitive rehabilitation company, and Chief Science Officer at www.biometriks.es, a leading company focused on developing brain neuromodulation devices for rehabilitation after brain acquired injury. Professor Cortes's has also achieved some honors such as the Ph.D. with Distinction (Extraordinary Award), Fulbright Fellowship, EPSRC Fellowship, Ramón y Cajal Fellowship, and the distinction of being an Ambassador for Spain at the prestigious NeurIPS conference.
