About
My PhD research was an integrated investigation of the Neogene foreland basin deposits (Siwalik Group) of the eastern Himalaya. The investigation was based on the integrated study of the stratigraphy, sedimentary facies, trace fossils, palaeodispersal pattern, petrography and geochemistry. Attempts were made to understand the large-scale variation in the stratigraphic architecture, depositional condition, palaeocurrent pattern to reflect on the interaction of tectonism, climate and paleo-geomorphology that controlled the sedimentation.
In future, my major research goal would be to unravel the interacting nature of tectonics, climate and sedimentary processes in a basin from the study of its deposits. Reconstructing the palaeo-landscape from the geological history, is a challenging task and has the potential to unravel the possible role of climate and tectonics in controlling the pattern of sedimentation. Himalayan foreland basin would remain the immediate focus of my research work but sedimentary succession of any other basin, amenable to similar analysis can be taken up.
Beside sedimentary facies analysis, interaction between biota and depositional processes, has emerged as one of the major field of research in recent times in understanding and characterisation of the depositional environment. Study of trace fossils will remain one of the major focus of my future research.
