Over the next 30 years it is estimated that, cumulatively, more than 6 million Canadians will be diagnosed with dementia. In order to address this anticipated – and already rising – population health demand, we must identify novel approaches to facilitate early diagnosis, identify the most pertinent predictors of cognitive decline and use these as steppingstones to discover and deliver novel therapies. The cerebrovascular contributions to declining cognition and emergent dementia are undeniable. Dr Muir’s research foci center on cerebral small vessel disease, Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy (CAA), hemorrhagic stroke, post stroke cognitive impairment, vascular dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease and amyloid immunotherapy risks. There are currently no treatments for CAA or cerebral small vessel disease, and the mainstay of therapy is vascular risk factor control. Dr. Muir’s research work has also evaluated novel and emerging blood-based biomarkers in CAA which may help advance diagnostic detection.
