About
I obtained my PhD in 2012 from the Department of Aerospace Engineering, IIT Madras. The PhD thesis a seminal work based on experiments elucidating previously unknown, fundamental aspects of thermoacoustic instability. The work led to new directions in the study of nonlinear thermoacoustic oscillations presently being followed-up by researchers internationally. Subsequently, I joined the Chair of Fluid Dynamics, TU Berlin as a postdoctoral researcher in the period 2012–2017. During this time I was the PI of a German Research Foundation (DFG) project on nonlinear and stochastic aspects of thermoacoustic instability. In addition I contributed to other ongoing research projects on combustion noise and thermoacoustic instability; and supervised one PhD (on flame flashback and blowout; jointly with University of Glasgow) and three Masters students on thermoacoustic instability. In 2017 I joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Ropar as an Assistant Professor.
During my research career I've worked with applied nonlinear dynamics, experimental studies on combustion, flames, acoustics, sprays, and flows. I am presently working with my students (two PhDs and two Masters) on projects involving atomization (ISRO-RESPOND), new gas turbine combustor technologies (supported by SPARC-MHRD), and novel liquid fuels (SERB-CRG). In addition to the publication list below, I have presented at several international conferences organized by the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), IIAV (International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration), Combustion Institute, ENOCC (European Nonlinear Oscillations Conference Committee) and others (international and national societies and individual institutes); and chaired two sessions in the reputed ASME Turbo Expo.
Studies (primarily experiments) on the nonlinear and stochastic features of thermoacoustic instability has been the most important aspect of my work and I am presently expanding the scope of my work to the development of practical combustion systems to address the challenges of carbon-free and sustainable power generation.
