About

Murthy currently holds the position of Scientific Officer (G) at the Materials Group in Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and serves as an honorary Associate Professor in Engineering Sciences at Homi Bhabha National Institute in Mumbai, India. Previously, he worked as a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Metallurgy & Materials at the University of Birmingham, UK, under the Marie Curie Individual Fellowship (MCIF-Horizon 2020) from 2018 to 2020, collaborating with Prof. Jon Binner.
He earned his Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences from Homi Bhabha National Institute, Mumbai, M.Tech. in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and B.Tech. in Metallurgy from NIT-Warangal. Murthy has been actively involved in studying the processing-structure-property correlation of non-oxide ceramics since 2002, contributing to over 80 articles in peer-reviewed journals, 3 book chapters, and one Encyclopaedia article. With an H-index of 27 in Scopus and 28 in Google Scholar, he is recognized for his scholarly impact.
Murthy has successfully developed a process flow-sheet and infrastructure for scaling up the production of various borides and carbides for nuclear, space, and defense applications. Several of his know-hows have been transferred to public and private sectors for commercial-scale production, addressing societal needs. His expertise extends to the fabrication of continuous fiber-reinforced ultra-high-temperature ceramic matrix composites using SIP and CVI methods.
He possesses extensive knowledge in the synthesis, processing, densification, microstructural characterization, tribology, oxidation, ablation, and the mechanical, physical, and thermal properties of non-oxide ceramics and their composites. Murthy's achievements have been recognized through various awards and fellowships, including the Marie Curie Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship (2018-2020), Distinguished Young Alumni Professional Achievement Award (2017) from NIT-Warangal, Young Metallurgist of the Year Award (2011) from the Ministry of Steel, Govt. of India, and Scientific & Technical Excellent Award (2020), among others. Additionally, he has received Group Achievement Awards from the Department of Atomic Energy, India, in 2013 and 2014, the All India Innovative Student Project Award in 2005 from the Indian National Academy of Engineers, and multiple Best/Merit Poster Awards at various conferences.
