About

Ana-Cristina Santos is a renowned Sociologist expert in gender and sexuality studies in Southern Europe.
After having worked for several years a researcher in Birkbeck, University of London, she holds a permanent position as Senior Principal Researcher with Habilitation in Human Rights at the Centre for Social Studies (CES), University of Coimbra, where she is Co-Director of the Feminist Studies Doctoral Programme and Chair of the Democracy, Justice and Human Rights Research Line.
Before that, Cristina was founder and co-Director of the International PhD Programme Human rights in Contemporary Societies between 2013 and 2022, as well as founder of the Sexuality Research Group at CES. In that capacity, she has successfully supervised over 20 of PhD students and post-doctoral researchers, both in the past and ongoing.

Over the years Cristina has secured funding and coordinated several research projects, both national and international. In relation to the European Research Council, after being awarded 2 grants (categories Starting in 2013 and Consolidator in 2022), she now leads TRACE, centred on LGBTQI+ ageing in Italy, Greece, Slovenia, Malta and Portugal, funded by ERC.

Cristina has acted as Evaluation Panel Member invited by several funding bodies, including ERC Advanced Grants SH3 panel 2022 and SH8 2024, Marie Skłodowska-Curie grants, the Swiss National Foundation, two National Evaluation Agency A3Es commissions in HEI, amongst others.
Cristina is also an elected member in her second mandate (2021-2024; 2024-2026) of the Executive Committee of the European Sociological Association, working in the areas of Communication, International Relations and Postgraduate Studies, and chairing the committee on Public Sociology, Diversity and Sustainability. In both mandates, Cristina was amongst the top 3 candidates who received most votes from her international peers.

She is also highly involved in activities of outreach, namely communication and dissemination of science to broader publics, pushing the boundaries of what scientific outputs can become. A good example is her currently involvement in the co-Direction of the documentary Outlasting, but also illustration books, podcasts and the curation of exhibitions.

Her most recent books are: The SAGE Handbook of Global Sexualities (2020); The Tenacity of the Couple Norm (UCL Press, Open Access, 2020); LGBTQ+ Intimacies in Southern Europe: Citizenship, Care and Choice (Palgrave, Open Access, 2023); and A Research Agenda for Sexuality and Aging (Edward Elgar Publishing, Open Access, forthcoming 2026).
