About
Dr. Amrit Kumar Mishra is a marine ecologist and biogeochemist with over eight years of post-PhD research experience working across Asia, Australia, and Europe. He is currently a Senior Research Scientist at the Centre for Tropical Water & Aquatic Research (TropWATER), James Cook University, Australia.
Dr. Mishra’s research focuses on understanding how sediment and water biogeochemistry influence seagrass and saltmarsh ecosystem responses to climate change and anthropogenic stressors. His work integrates blue carbon science, ocean acidification, trace metal chemistry, wetland restoration, biodiversity assemblages, and ecosystem services within a seascape connectivity framework. He develops science-based monitoring programs and research solutions that inform conservation management and environmental policy.
He completed his Ph.D. in Marine Ecology as an Erasmus Mundus Fellow at the University of Plymouth (UK) and the University of Algarve (Portugal), where he investigated seagrass responses to climate change using Mediterranean species as model systems. He also holds an M.Sc. in Marine Biology from Pondicherry Central University, India, and a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Microbiology from Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology, India.
Dr. Mishra has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals, including Science of the Total Environment, Communications Earth & Environment, Marine Pollution Bulletin, Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, Frontiers in Marine Science, and Marine Ecology Progress Series. His work has contributed significantly to advancing knowledge on blue carbon dynamics, trace metal bioindication, and ecological connectivity between seagrass, mangrove, and saltmarsh ecosystems. He has received over 600 citations and holds an h-index of 14.
He has successfully secured competitive national and international research grants supporting projects on blue carbon restoration, seagrass–mangrove connectivity, ocean acidification mitigation, and pollution impacts. His recognitions include the Erasmus Mundus Fellowship (first Indian recipient of the MARES programme), the Ocean Foundation Fellowship (USA), the Rauf Ali Grant in Ecology of Islands, and the National Postdoctoral Fellowship (India).
Beyond research, Dr. Mishra actively contributes to the scientific community as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Aquatic Plants and Frontiers in Plant Science, and as a reviewer for multiple high-impact journals. He is a member of several international professional societies, including the Australian Marine Sciences Association, the Society of Wetland Scientists, the World Seagrass Association, and the Society for Conservation Biology.
His research aims to bridge ecological science, climate mitigation strategies, and applied restoration practices to strengthen coastal resilience in a rapidly changing world.
