Prof. (Dr). Ibrahim Ibnusaud is the honorary founder director of Rural Research Institute for the Conservation of Science, Technology and Arts (RRICSTA), Kerala, India. He was also the honorary founding director of the Institute for Intensive Research in Basic Sciences (IIRBS), Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala, India (2009-2020). Dr. Ibnusaud obtained his Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, in 1991. After a short academic and industrial position, in 1993, he joined Mahatma Gandhi University as a Lecturer in organic chemistry and was promoted to Professor in 2009. Professor Ibnusaud is a Member of National Academy of Sciences (MNASc), Lucknow. He has supervised 12 Ph.D students, and obtained several US and Indian patents in addition to authoring several peer reviewed research, and review publications.
Dr. Ibnusaud's research group works on the synthesis of enantiopure molecules of biological interest by adopting the chiral pool strategy. At M.G.university (1993), he initiated research work in the synthesis of enantiopure compounds (EPC synthesis) using chiral building blocks obtained from regional resources; an area different from his PhD work. Efficient methods have been developed for the isolation of (2S,3S) and (2S,3R)-tetrahydro-3-hydroxy-5-oxo-2,3-furandicarboxylic (garcinia and hibiscus) acids in a kilogram scale, and these molecules have been converted to chiral six carbon frame work related to chiral γ-butyrolactone such as bis-lactones, pyrrolidines and furo[2,3-b]pyrroles, otherwise difficult to synthesize. Thus for the first time, title acids have been employed as potent multifunctional Chiron, and added to the existing select list of chiral molecules obtained from the chiral pool. Dr. Ibnusaud developed his own organic chemistry utilizing the less studied plant resources of India.
The distinctive achievements of Dr. Ibnusuad includes, the first, and the only faculty member among the Universities in Kerala, to have 6 US awarded patents for the work exclusively done at M.G. University, the first faculty member among the Universities in Kerala to utilize regional resources to isolate Garcinia acid and Hibiscus acid and employed them as fine chemicals in organic synthesis thereby adding value for local plant sources, the first faculty member among the Universities in Kerala to obtain the first Major instrument namely NMR under DST-IRPHA scheme, instrumental in launching the first Integrated MSc Programme (after plus two) among the Universities in Kerala, in the campus of M.G. University, where the course and curriculum structure is of international standard, and majority of the faculties are invited from the premier institutions of India and abroad. For the first time, thematic questions were implemented successfully, for the entrance examination of Integrated MSc Programme. He was also instrumental in introducing a new teaching pedagogy in the post graduate level at School of Chemical Sciences and IIRBS, where he established the learning and research culture confined only to Premier Institutions of World. He gave rise to a gurukul model education system at IIRBS to utilize student’s man power effectively for capacity building by involving them in original research work, instead of giving them outdated laboratory tasks. This approach has resulted in producing high quality research publications, and for the first time a self-sustaining building complex have been established for higher level of learning and research.
