About
Dr. Sharma Ranbir is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI), Republic of Korea. His research lies at the interface of astrophysics, cosmology, and applied statistics, with a strong emphasis on model-independent and data-driven approaches to understanding the Universe. His work aims to extract robust physical information from observational data while minimizing assumptions about underlying theoretical models.
During his doctoral research, he developed a novel non-parametric, model-independent framework to reconstruct the functional form of cosmological observables directly from tabulated observational datasets. This methodology allows for unbiased reconstruction of physical quantities without imposing predefined parametric forms, making it particularly well suited for late-time cosmology and precision data analysis. The framework has broad applicability to observables such as the Hubble parameter, distance measures, and other quantities derived from large-scale structure and expansion history data.
Throughout his PhD, Dr. Ranbir received extensive training in statistical inference and computational techniques relevant to modern cosmology. His expertise includes principal component analysis, likelihood and Bayesian methods, chi-square minimization, covariance matrix estimation, uncertainty propagation, and numerical optimization. He has applied these methods to a variety of cosmological datasets, including cosmic chronometers, supernova distance moduli, and other observational probes. In parallel, he has developed strong computational skills, particularly in Python and scientific computing workflows, enabling efficient analysis of large and heterogeneous datasets.
In addition to methodological development, he is actively engaged in translating theoretical and statistical frameworks into usable software tools. He is currently involved in the development of a Python-based wrapper for the non-parametric reconstruction algorithm introduced in his doctoral work, with the goal of facilitating reproducibility, accessibility, and broader adoption within the astrophysics and cosmology communities.
Dr. Ranbir completed his PhD at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali, Punjab, India (2016 batch). He earned his Master’s degree from Tezpur University and his Bachelor’s degree from B. Borooah College, Guwahati University, Assam, India. His academic training spans a diverse range of institutions in India, contributing to a broad and interdisciplinary perspective on theoretical, observational, and computational astrophysics.
His current and long-term research interests include statistical cosmology, non-parametric and machine-assisted reconstruction techniques, precision analysis of cosmological observations, and the development of open and reliable computational tools for astrophysical data analysis.
