Dr. Rai did his M.D. from SMS Medical College, Jaipur and did his DM in Gastroenterology from the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi in 1986. Being the first gastroenterologist in Rajasthan, he has been instrumental in developing the speciality in the state. Under his leadership the course of DM Gastroenterology was started in SMS Medical College in 1998. He is a keen researcher and has published 110 scientific papers in various international journals like, American Journal of Gastroenterology, BMJ, World Journal of Gastroenterology, GI Endoscopy, Tropical Gastroenterology, etc...and he has authored several chapters in various text books of Gastroenterology. In honour of his scientific contributions he has been included in the editorial board of World Journal of Gastroenterology and American Journal of Gastroenterology. He was elected as the President of Indian Society of Gastroenterology for the year 2007-08.
