About

Paromita Ghosh is Scientist - F and Head, Centre for Socio-Economic Development at G. B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment, Almora, Uttarakhand. She has a throughout first class career from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. She did her Ph.D. form Department of Botany, Banaras Hindu University, through GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) fellowship.
She specializes in Forest Ecology, Grasslands and Air Pollution. Her acquired fields of expertise are soil nutrient dynamics, carbon sequestration, rehabilitation of degraded lands, community based natural resource management, value addition of non timbre forest products (NTFP), livelihood and rural development. Presently she is working on community based eco-smart model village development based on carrying capacity of natural resources in a village cluster in Hawalbag block of Almora.
She has been working in the Indian Himalayan region for the past twenty two years on various models of rehabilitation of degraded land in the Indian Himalayan region, carbon sequestration and soil nutrient dynamics in various ecosystems and value addition of NTFP and improving livelihood of the rural population through natural resource management.
She has published more than fifty scientific papers in various journals of repute and twelve chapters in edited books. She has also written five popular articles for societal awareness.
Dr. Ghosh has presented her research findings in eighteenteen international conference and twenty five national and state conferences. She was invited to Japan and Canada (Toronto) and Thailand (Bangkok and Pattaya) for presenting her research work.
She has ten awards and fellowships to her credits till date. Some of them are: The DST fast Track Young scientist fellowship in2005, Young scientist award in Botany, by UCOST, DST, Govt of UK, 2006, Alice J. Murphy Outstanding Achievement award for Excellence in Research and Education leading to a better understanding of the Ecology of the Tropics,2007 Young Soil Conservationist Award-2008, for outstanding contributions in the field of Soil Microbiology conferred by Indian Association of Soil & Water Conservationists and Best Poster award, in Agricultural and Forestry Science section at the 100th Indian Science Congress, 2013.
Dr. Ghosh has worked as Principal investigator and co-principal investigator to fifteen projects with budget above twenty lakhs rupees (INR) on thematic areas ranging from soil nutrient dynamics, litter decomposition, soil nematode diversity, rehabilitation of degraded land, carbon sequestration and climate change, livelihood enhancement in remote areas of Himalayas and community led eco-smart model village funded by SERB, DST, Govt of India, NAIP, ICAR, Govt of India and Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Govt of India.
She has organized three international scientific conferences as co-convenor and many (approx. 60) training programmes to various stakeholders including, IAS and IFS officers, Eco- task force personnel, school children, doctors, teachers, farmers and women and people from backward societies in various aspects of rehabilitation of degraded land, livelihood opportunities and natural resource management, climate change, good governance and policy issues of Indian Himalayan region.
She served as coordinator for ENVIS- on Himalayan Ecology, Executive editor for ENVIS newsletter and Bulletin, member editor for Institute newsletter and reviewer for many international science journals like Plant and Soil.
She holds life membership of eight academic bodies from India and is also member of IUCN (CEM and CEESP), IPBES and Mountain forum and ICIMOD.
At present she is venturing into working and learning about a new and less explored ecosystem: The Peat lands of Indian Himalayan region along with exploring new vistas in Agroforestry systems of Indian Himalaya for fulfilling 2030 SDG goals and circular economy
