About

Dr. Sandeep Gupta received M.Tech. (Applied Geophysics) degree with a University Medal from the University of Roorkee (Now IIT Roorkee) India in 1997. He obtained Ph.D. (Geophysics) degree from Osmania University, Hyderabad, India in 2004. The thesis was awarded as the best thesis in Geophysics (2004) by ONGC-AEG. After joining CSIR-NGRI as a Junior Scientist in 2004, he currently holds the position of Chief Scientist as well as Professor in AcSIR.

To understand the seismotectonics, seismic hazard, geodynamics, and mineral exploration in varying tectonic regimes, Dr. Gupta generates seismic images at varying scales by using earthquakes and/or seismic noise as the source and applying different techniques (e.g., Seismic Tomography, Receiver Function, Noise-correlation). Dr. Gupta is currently working on seismic hazard assessment in the Himalaya as well as identification, characterization, and location of geo-hazards (such as landslide, flash flood) using seismic observations.

Dr. Gupta has 60 scientific papers in national and international journals and has presented over 45 papers at various conferences. He is a recipient of the National Geoscience Award – 2014 by Government of India. Dr. Gupta has guided and co-guided many national and international students in their research work. He has supervised 4 Ph.D. and 5 are in progress. Dr. Gupta is a technical reviewer for many national/international journals (e.g., JGR, GRL, GJI, Tectonophysics, Marine Geology, PEPI, etc.), project proposals, and Ph.D. thesis.

Dr. Gupta has completed 07 projects and is leading 06 projects funded by CSIR, DRDO, NTPC, DST and an Indo-Srilanka international project. Dr. Gupta visited Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan (2007-2008) under BOYSCAST fellowship by the Government of India. In 2012, he visited IPG Paris, France, as a Raman Research Fellow by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India. As a key researcher (Geophysicist), he worked on the India-Australia Strategic Research Fund (IASRF) project for exploring the gold potential in Dharwar Craton.

Dr. Sandeep is elected Fellow of Telangana Academy of Sciences, and Geological Society of India. Dr. Gupta is elected Vice President of Asian Seismological Commission (IASPEI-ASC). He is Associate Editor of Journal of the Geological Society of India. Dr. Sandeep is also nodal officer of the CSIR-NGRI-JIGYASA (an outreach program).
