SUDHANSHU VRATI

About

Dr. Sudhanshu Vrati trained as a virologist at the Australian National University, Canberra as a doctoral student, and subsequently at the CSIRO, Sydney as a post-doctoral research scientist. He worked at the National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi, during 1987-2013, where his group primarily focused on the biology of the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) with research aimed at understanding the virus replication and designing anti-virals and vaccine candidates. Dr. Vrati has been the founder and Dean of the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (2010-2016), where he headed the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Research Center. Since October 2016, Dr. Sudhanshu Vrati has been working at the Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB), first as its Executive Director (2016-2023) and currently as a Professor. Dr Vrati’s research has focused on understanding RNA virus replication and designing anti-virals and vaccine candidates against Japanese encephalitis (JE) and rotaviral diarrhoea. Dr. Vrati is a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), and the Indian Academy of Science (IAS). He has received several awards, including the prestigious National Bioscience Award and the Tata Innovation Fellowship from the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. Currently, he is a JC Bose National Fellow of the SERB, DST, Govt. of India.
