Dr. Venkatesh (Venky) Shankar is the Harold M. Brierley Endowed Professor, Professor of Marketing, and Academic Director at The Brierley Institute of Customer Engagement at Cox School of Business, Southern Methodist University. His areas of specialization include customer engagement, innovation, artificial intelligence, digital business, marketing strategy, retailing, international marketing, and pricing.
He has been recognized as one among the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds, as one among the Top 1% of Marketing Scientists, as a Top 10 Innovation Scholar, and as a Top Retail Influencer. He is a Fellow of the American Marketing Association (AMA), a Distinguished Research Fellow of the Institute for Study of Business Markets (ISBM), and winner of the Parlin Award for Contributions to Marketing Research and Practice, Blair Award for Marketing Accountability, Academy of Marketing Science (AMS) Cutco/Vector Outstanding Marketing Educator Award for lifetime contributions to marketing, the Lifetime Achievement Award in Retailing from AMA, the Mahajan Award for Lifetime Contributions to Marketing Strategy from AMA, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Indian Institute of Management (IIM), the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), the Clarke award for the Outstanding Direct and Interactive Marketing Educator, the Steenkamp Long-term Impact Award for an IJRM article, the Green Award for the Best Article in Journal of Marketing Research (JMR), and the Lehmann Award for the best dissertation-based article in an AMA journal.
Dr. Shankar is Co-Editor of the Handbook of Marketing Strategy and author of Shopper Marketing. His research has been published in leading journals such as JMR, Management Science, Marketing Science, Journal of Marketing (JM), Strategic Management Journal (SMJ), Harvard Business Review (HBR), and Sloand Management Review (SMR). The Shankar-Spiegel Award is named in his honor.
He serves as the Chair of the Marketing Accountability Standards Board (MASB) Advisory Council. He is ex-President of the Marketing Strategy Special Interest Group, AMA and serves on the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Council and Business-to-Business (B2B) Leadership Board. He was also a two-term Academic Trustee of the MSI. He is editor emeritus of the Journal of Interactive Marketing (JIM), ex-Associate Editor of JMR, Area Editor of IJRM, and ex-Associate Editor of Management Science and JM. He serves on the policy boards of Journal of Retailing and JIM and on the editorial boards of JAMS and Responsible Research in Business and Management Honor Roll.
He is a three-time winner of the Krowe Award for outstanding teaching. He has been a visiting faculty at Stanford University, MIT, INSEAD, Singapore Management University, SDA Bocconi, Chinese European International Business School, and the Indian School of Business. He was selected as the 2014 Guru to deliver the GuruSpeak lecture across India. He was a Research Fellow of Northwestern University’s Retail Analytics Council. Shankar has consulting or executive teaching experience with organizations such as Allstate, Cap Gemini, Colgate Palmolive, Deloitte, GlaxoSmithKline, Halliburton, Hewlett Packard, HSBC, Humana, IBM, Infosys, Intel, Lockheed Martin, Lucent Technologies, Mahindra, Marriott International, Medtronic, Microsoft, Northrop Grumman, PepsiCo, PNC Bank, Philips, and Volvo. Dr. Shankar received his BS in Engineering from IIT, Kharagpur, his MBA from the IIM, Calcutta, and his Ph.D. (Marketing) from the Kellogg School, Northwestern University.
