I passed MBBS (1968) with honours and gold medals and MS (1973-74) under Professor Pritam Das from Allahabad University. In between I joined Army as Captain (AMC) for 5 years, seeing action in eastern sector during Bangla Desh War.
From 1975 to 1977 August, I worked as registrar to Professor LE Hughes at the National School of Medicine, Cardiff, UK where I received a rigorous training in general and cancer surgery and passed FRCS (1976) in the first attempt. I returned to India immediately after my training in UK in 1978.
I was selected Lecturer in General Surgery at IMS, BHU that I joined on 10th March 1979. I was promoted Reader in General Surgery in 1982. While in service I completed PhD in Cancer Immunology in 1984 and set on to develop Surgical Oncology in IMS, BHU. A Division of Surgical Oncology was created in 1990, and in the same year I was promoted Professor of Surgery (Oncology) and given the charge of the Division of Surgical Oncology. Subsequently UGC gave COSIST programme (1.5 crores, 1990) for development of Cancer Immunology. This also helped to establish a dadicated Surgical Oncology Operation Theatre, Immunology Laboratory, Treatment Planning System and Radiotherapy Simulator. In April 2004 the dream of establishing a Department of Surgical Oncology was realised when the Honourable Visitor gave his approval to creation of the Department of Surgical Oncology. One post of Reader and two of Lecturers was sanctioned by the UGC to start the MCh training programme.
At the national level the Indian Association of Surgical Oncology selected me President of in 1997 and the National Academy of Medical Sciences India conferred FAMS the same year. I represented Indian Journl of Surgery at its editorial board and had the privilege of being Editor of Surgery (Journal of UP State Chapter of ASI) and Quarterly Journal of Surgical Sciences (BHU).
At International level the World Federation of Surgical Oncology Societies (WFSOS) honoured me with membership of its executive body to represent Southeast Asia from 1998 todate. The Royal Society of Medicine, London, honoured me with its membership in 1992. I am associate editor of prestigious Journal of Surgical Oncology (USA) and member Editorial Boards of Journal of Cancer Research and Therapeutics (USA). I was honoured with Visiting Professorship at the East Glamorgan Hospital, Wales UK for one year and for another one year I was given the privilege to head a surgical Unit at the Welsh National School of Medicine Cardiff as senior lecturer.
I have established strong academic rapport with the Welsh National School of Medicine UK from 1978 onwards. This has helped human resource development of 34 young surgeons from India for higher training in Cardiff UK.
I am actively involved with the academic and research activities as life member, of Indian National Science Congress, Indian Association of Surgical Oncology, Association of Surgeons of India, Indian Breast Group, WFSOS (World Federation of Surgical Oncology Societies) and Coloproctology Association of India. I am participating in the International Cancer Treatment Trial of ATLAS for breast cancer conducted from Oxford UK and National Breast Cancer trial from Tata Hospital, Mumbai. I have brought a study flow of research money to IMS, BHU, the most recent being Rs 1.5crores from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to establish Oncology Wing in the IMS, BHU in 2002.
Government of India nominated me a member of the Institute Body of AIIMS New Delhi. The Institute Body itself honoured me with Membership of Governing Body, Hospital Affairs Committee, Finance Committee Selection Committees and Chairmanship of Academic Committee of AIIMS.
I am a PG teacher for 27 years, PG examiner in Surgery for Universities of Allahabad, Kanpur, Lucknow, Agra, Jabalpur, Reewa, Gaya, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Aligarh, Meerut, PGI- Chandigarh, AIIMS and BHU.
I have organised 3 international and 10 national conferences besides giving numerous guest lectures, symposia and operative skill demonstrations.
I have been honoured by the ASI and UP, Bihar and West Bangal Chapters of ASI with orations. I have travelled widely in India and world in pesuite of academic excellance, knowledge and to demonstrate operating skills.
I have been Head Department of General Surgery IMS, BHU for 3 years (1997-2000) and at present I am Founder Head of the newly created Department of Surgical Oncology. I was a member of the National Board of Examinations to advise the syllabus and examination modality for NBE. The Indian Council of Medical Research nominated me on the National Taskforce for Management of Cancer. I am on the panel for inspection of Medical Schools and Hospitals on behalf of Medical Council of India and the National Board of Examinations. The national committee on development of guidelines of treatment of cancer has nominated me to its fold where I advise on treatment of breast caner.
