Professor G. Subramanian joined IIT Madras as a Lecturer in 1966 and became full Professor in 1984. His research interest is in Structural Mechanics, covering Finite Element Analysis, Experimental Moire and Image Processing. He received his B.E.(Hons) in Civil Engineering from Annamalai in 1964 (with first rank and Best Boy award), M.E. (Aero) IISc. in 1966 and PhD (Aero) IIT Madras in 1973. He is recognised widely as an eminent teacher and research adviser. He has about sixty publications in refereed national and international journals besides several conference proceedings and invited monograph articles. He was the sole adviser to several Ph.D. and M.S. (research) scholars. His publications are quoted extensively in handbooks and journal papers.
He headed the structures laboratory from 1974 onward (in particular, image processing and holographic and Moire facilities in the department were developed by him). He is an authority both in Finite Element Method (FEM) and Experimental Moire. His expertise is sought often in refereeing articles for many International Journals and for solving industrial problems in mechanical engineering with FEM and experimental strain measurements.
He is a Fellow of the Aeronautical Society of India and a Joint Member of the Society for Experimental Mechanics and the British Society of Strain Measurement. He was the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Mathematical and Physical Sciences for several years, a member of the Editorial Advisory Boards for International Journal for Engineering Analysis and Design, and the Journal of the Aeronautical Society of India and Resonance.
He visited Germany on a DAAD fellowship in 1985 to work at TU and DFVLR at Braunschweig. His visit, on this occasion was marked by a citation with his photograph in 'Braunschweiger Zeitung'.
He was the Head of the Aerospace Engineering Department at IITM during 1988-1992. He successfully organized 8th NASAS (National Seminar on Aerospace Structures, 1998, IIT Madras) as its Convener of the National Advisory Committee, and Chairman of the Organizing Committee.
He was the Dean (Administration) at IITM for two terms. He also was a member of the IIT Madras Board of Governors. Earlier, at a crucial juncture during 1995-96 he was handed the responsibility of the Registrar of the Institute additionally. He also served NIT, Warangal as a member of its Board of Governors for a full term.
After his stint at IIT Madras he has been visiting until recently, for over ten years, the School of Mechanical Engineering, SRM Institute of Science and Technology as a Professor and teaching and advising PhD. scholars
