About

Jai Prakash Jaiswal is an alumnus of G.B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology (GBPUAT), Pantnagar, India. He obtained B.Sc. Ag. (Hons) & A.H., M.Sc. Ag. and Ph.D. degrees in 1983, 1985 and 1990, respectively. He received Dr. K.S. Krishnan (Department of Atomic Energy) Senior Research Fellowship from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay for his Ph.D. thesis research. Dr. Jaiswal prior to joining GBPUAT, Pantnagar in 2003 as Associate Professor, served U.P. Council of Agricultural Research, Lucknow during 1992-2003 as Scientific Officer (Plant Breeding), and Mahendra Hybrid Seeds Co. Ltd., Jalna as Assistant maize breeder cum quality control officer during 1990-92. He became professor (full) on May 6, 2009 at GBPUAT. He has been entrusted with the responsibilities of Director, Communication, Head, Department of Genetics & Plant Breeding, Programme coordinator of All India Coordinated Research Project on Wheat & Barley of ICAR and Nodal Officer of Pantnagar Centre for Plant Genetic Resources (PCPGR) at the University.

Prof. Jaiswal is contributing to the improvement of wheat and barley by integrating classical and molecular breeding approaches. He has developed 15 varieties of wheat, and two varieties of barley for their cultivation in different agro-eco-systems. He has registered 10 extant varieties of wheat with Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Authority (PPV&FRA), Government of India, registered 14 novel germplasm with ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi, and developed >50 genetic stocks possessing resistance to wheat diseases including resistance to Ug99 of stem rust, and wheat blast, climate-resilient and nutritional traits using pre-breeding, and identified novel QTLs for heat and drought tolerance, pyramided genes for rust resistance and quality traits using MAB approach. He collaborated with scientists from prominent institutions like IARI, NBPGR, BHU and CIMMYT. Besides AICRP on Wheat & Barley, he has handled 11 externally funded research projects including competitive grant projects as PI/Coordinator. He has guided 2 PDFs, 13 Ph.D., and 17 M. Sc. Ag. students for their thesis research, and published ~100 research papers in peer-reviewed journals (Google scholar citations> 2400, h Index 24, I index 48), 4 edited books, 2 compendiums, 6 technical bulletins, 10 book chapters and >50 technical/popular articles.

Prof. Jaiswal is the recipient of prestigious recognitions like Dr. V.S. Mathur Memorial Award 2022, Dr. Radhakrishnan Best Teacher-Researcher Award 2021, Dr. M.V. Rao Memorial award 2019, Dr. R.B. Ekbote award 2019, Dr. B.B. Singh Outstanding Scientist Award 2019, Fellow of Indian Society of Genetics & Plant Breeding 2017, Fellow of the Society for Advancement of Wheat and Barley Research 2022 besides other awards. He was Keynote Speaker on VII Rao Bahadur Dr. Ram Dhan Singh Memorial Lecture at CCS HAU, Hisar. He is the recipient of the Leadership of Academician Programme (LEAP) certificate of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (now Ministry of Education), Government of India. He was a consultant to FAO in Myanmar in 2001 and visited CIMMYT, Mexico as visiting scientist in 2007, and later visited Australia, Canada, France, Japan, Romania, Russia, Turkey, the USA besides other countries.
