About

I am currently working as Assistant Professor in GIS Cell at Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT) Allahabad. MNNIT has been granted the status of institution of national importance by the Parliament of India. I did M. Tech. in specialization Geoinformatics, Civil Engineering in 2011 from IIT Kanpur. Later, I completed PhD on topic Roadway Features Inventorization Using Mobile Terrestrial Laser Scanning in 2017.
My research concentrated on geospatial features identification using LiDAR data. I have also worked on multi-sensor integration and fusion. I worked on design and development of first indigenous land based Mobile Mapping System (MMS) of India. This was the second attempt by any Asian university to design the MMS. This MMS was designed using an integration of off-the-shelf sensors such as LiDAR, GNSS, IMU, and Camera, etc. One of the significant achievements of this research was the development of the proprietary knowledge such as integration methodology, calibration mechanism, and fusion technologies that were restricted to industries abroad and was not available in the public domain. This research work was published in the Journal of Indian Society of Remote Sensing and received Best Paper Publication Award of a year. Due to the indigenous development of MMS and development of proprietary knowledge, this research received significant interest from mapping community and was featured as the “cover story article” in the Geospatial Today magazine. Excited by the potential of LiDAR technology to solve the problem of India, later, I started working on the development of the algorithms to identify and extract various features from mobile LiDAR data. This work also earned me my PhD in 2017. In this work, I designed and tested algorithms for pole-like objects detection from mobile LiDAR data along urban, peri-urban and rural roadways. My work was unique as I could address the complex cases as reported in the literature. I further designed algorithms for road surface extraction in certain complex cases, e.g., road without raised curb, road boundary made up by asphalt/soil, asphalt/vegetation, or asphalt/grassy separation. These cases were not dealt till my work as the earlier work was mostly in well-laid out roadways where these definitions are very much standard unlike roads in India. Presence of on-road objects was also dealt with in the proposed algorithm. All above researches have been published in reputed journals. My experience and views in LiDAR domain recently resulted in further media coverage at international level through a publication in GIM INTERNATIONAL (July-August, 2018). In the field of LiDAR technology, I have delivered many Keynote Speech/distinguished Lecture/Guest Lectures/Invited Talks. Currently, I am reviewer of technical journals from ASCE, SPIE, Taylor & Francis, springer, IEEE, Hindawi, etc..
Currently my on-going research works are ground filtering, trees identification, roadway objects recognition using MLS and ALS datasets, 3D virtual sight distance analysis using LiDAR point clouds, forest inventory using UAV LiDAR, Plant crop phenotyping and heritage sites/monuments three-dimensional (3D) mapping using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). The departments under ministry of road transport and highways and Indian railways, Forest departments are among those, who are demanding the LiDAR-based 3D mapping solutions for their assets mapping, maintenance and management.
