Balaji Prakash is currently the Associate Dean, Sciences and Professor of Structural Biology at the School of Arts and Sciences at Ahmedabad University.

Professor Prakash was one of the founding faculty of the Department of Biological Sciences and Bio-Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (2002-2016) and later led the interdisciplinary Department of Molecular Nutrition at CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore (CFTRI). He joined Ahmedabad University in July 2020 and leads all the science programmes at the University.
Professor Prakash received the prestigious International Senior Research Fellowship of the Wellcome Trust, U.K in 2004, and the National Bioscience Award (DBT) in 2010. He was elected as a Member of the Guha Research Conference in 2011 and a Fellow of India’s National Academy of Sciences in 2013.

Professor Prakash is a structural biologist, fascinated by enzymes, and attempts to understand the catalytic mechanisms that enzymes employ, the rules that govern their evolution, and engineer them for specific applications. His work brings out intriguing structure-function relationships in enzymes and facilitates the design of new anti-bacterial molecules. He also worked on many interdisciplinary projects that led to the design of new food preservatives and new methods using bacteria and yeast to print and fabricate electronic circuits, micro lenses for OLEDs and Braille printing on ordinary paper.
