About

Dr. Vaish S.S. is presently working as a Professor and Head, Department of Mycology and Plant Pathology, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. He was born in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh on 9th October in 1968. He did his B.Sc. (Ag.) in 1988 from the C.C.R.D Post Graduate College, Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. Dr. Vaish did M.Sc. (Ag.) and Ph.D. in Mycology and Plant Pathology from the Department of Mycology and Plant Pathology, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, in 1990 and 1999, respectively.
Positions hold:
He served as a Part-Time Lecturer-Plant Pathology at the Udai Pratap Autonomous College, Varanasi and Tilak Dhari P G College, Jaunpur in 1995 and during 1997-1998, respectively. He joined as an Assistant Professor-Cum-Junior Scientist (Plant Pathology) in July 2001 at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Sher-E-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Kashmir, Leh (Ladakh). He joined as Lecturer-cum-Junior Pathologist (Wheat and Barley) in the Department of Mycology and Plant Pathology, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University in 2006. Dr. Vaish promoted to the rank of Associate Professor and Professor in the same department in 2013 and 2016.
Foreign Visits:
He has visited China, Kathmandu, Turkey, Russia, Morocco, and Kenya for presenting his researches and getting expertize in the field of nematology and rust pathology including about Ug99 under the leadership of Prof. Robert Park and Prof. Gordon L Cisar . He has attended various national and international conferences/ symposia/ workshops.
Awards/Honours/Recognitions:
He has also been awarded Best Teacher Award, ICAR. He has served the Indian Phytopathological Society as Zonal Councilor (Mid-Eastern Zone, 2010). He has also been awarded Best Teacher Award, ICAR. He has chaired a scientific session on management of plant parasitic nematodes along with Dr. Boris Borisov during 10th International Nematological Symposium held at Golistsyno-Bolshie Vyazemy, Moscow region, Russia, during 01-05th July, 2013. He conducted 71st Annual Meeting of Indian Phytopathological Society and National Symposium on “Recent Challenges and Opportunities in Sustainable Plant Health Management” in 2019.

Research Areas:
His research interests include wheat, barley and mustard pathology, host-pathogen interaction and bioprospecting microbes and microbial products with respect to biological control of plant parasitic nematodes using predaceous fungi.
Significant scientific contributions to plant pathology: He has guided 13 M.Sc. (Ag.) students and two Ph.D. students and presently guiding four M.Sc. (Ag.) and five Ph.D. students. Served as Editor (Nematology), Indian Phytopathology, IPS, New Delhi for 2014-2016. Published more than 60 research papers in high impact journals, 3 authored books and 6 book chapters. He contributed as plant pathologist for developing high yielding wheat variety HUW-838 resistant to rusts, blast and bunt released by honorable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Damodardas Modi in 2021 and published in The Gazette of India. Also contributed for developing Mahamana 113 (Barley Variety) and Malviya 669 (Wheat Variety) in 2018. Also developed five promising germplasm of wheat and registered by Plant Germplasm Committee (PGRC) so far. He has also actively involved in the ACRIP Wheat and Barley and mustard programme as well as survey and technology transmission programs at farmers’ fields. Participated in Monitoring team of wheat and Barley in North Eastern Plain Zone of the Country from 2007-2016.
