About

Thirumurthy Velpandian is a Professor of Pharmacology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences. In 2025, he was elected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences.

His Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy Laboratories are engaged in the repurposing and development of drugs for ocular therapeutics. His research group focuses on optimizing and rationalizing drug therapy for various ocular diseases and disorders, including infections & inflammation (uveitis), glaucoma, angiogenesis-related conditions, and diabetic eye complications. The group is also actively involved in investigating the impact of environmental pollutants on human health, with special emphasis on ocular health.

His team continues to explore xenobiotic penetration across blood–ocular barriers by studying transporter susceptibility and utilizing AI/ML-based approaches to predict ocular drug disposition and support pharmacokinetic simulation studies for novel therapeutic agents.

His laboratory is supported by research grants from Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), and Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), as well as collaborations with pharmaceutical and startup companies.

His interests and hobbies include bioelectronics, Hindu art and theology, and yoga.
