About
J. Palacio studied a 5 year bachelor in Physics at U. Autònoma de Barcelona, performing two exchange programs: Freie Universität Berlin (Germany) and U. Católica de Santiago (Chile). His interest in astroparticle physics and Dark Matter (DM) research was born during a 1-year master in Advanced Physics between Universitat de Valencia and Institut de Física Corpuscular (IFIC a Center of Excellence Severo Ochoa). He was elected for a 4-year PhD grant at Institut de Física d'Altes Energies (IFAE), also Severo Ochoa awarded, on indirect DM searches with the Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs), as part of the international collaborations MAGIC and CTA. With the goal of building a multidisciplinary expertise on DM detection, he moved to the underground lab LNGS during the upgrade works to XENONnT within the XENON Collaboration. There, he led the on-site contributions of two institutions: Subatech (CNRS, Nantes) and Max Planck Institut (MPIK, Heidelberg).
He was approached by Laboratorio Subterráneo de Canfranc (LSC) to contribute to NEXT100, where he is currently the PI of the NEXT group at LSC, with responsibilities on the xenon gas system, active tank recuperation of xenon and Cleanliness responsible on-site during NEXTS100 assembly. His expertise will be key to lead the upgrade to NEXT-HD, the leading experiment at LSC for the next decade. He is also the responsible of the LSC contributions to Hyper-Kamiokande, the leading frontier experiment on neutrinos for the next 20 yers, on the development of a 20' PMT cover. Mr. Palacio has also been appointed Prinipal Investigator of the LSC underground project Qubits, with the aim of building an underground Q-bit station, project funded with national funds until September 2025.
In December 2024, Mr. Palacio became a permanent advanced scientist of Laboratorio Subterráneo de Canfranc, with a position oriented mainly on noble gas detectors techniques.
