Professor Dr. Shriram S. Sonawane is a distinguished academic and researcher with over 22 years of professional experience. He is currently serving as a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur. Throughout his career, he has made groundbreaking contributions to several advanced and interdisciplinary domains, including nanotechnology, polymers,nanocomposites, nano-biotechnology, microfluidics, process engineering, and process simulation and modeling.
Dr. Sonawane’s research outputs are both prolific and impactful. He has authored over 200 research articles in SCI-indexed journals, with his work achieving significant global recognition. His scholarly contributions have been cited more than 6,500 times on Google Scholar, where he maintains an impressive h-index of 45 and an i10-index of 101. On Scopus, his research has garnered more than 6,500 citations, with an h-index of 42, underscoring the far-reaching influence and high quality of his work.

In the realm of research leadership, Dr. Sonawane has successfully executed numerous high- value projects funded by prestigious national agencies. He has completed five major research projects and is presently leading three ongoing initiatives, including the “Development of Controlled Shape and Size Metal Oxide Nanoparticles for Heat Exchanger Applications,” funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), and the “Experimental Investigations of Critical Heat Flux Enhancement Using Nanofluids,” supported by SERB-DST. His collaboration with ISRO on the “Compact Hybrid System for Human Urine Recycling” exemplifies his ability to address nationally significant engineering challenges, contributing to resource-efficient and sustainable solutions.

Dr. Sonawane’s commitment to innovation and intellectual property is evident in his remarkable achievements in patent development. He holds more than twleve patents, many of which have been granted. His influence extends further through his role as an author and editor of thirty-five books and book chapters, published by internationally esteemed publishers such as Elsevier and CRC Press. These works have significantly advanced knowledge dissemination in his areas of expertise.

His outstanding contributions to science and engineering have been recognized through numerous prestigious accolades. He was honored with the Dr. C.V. Raman Distinguished Scientist Award (2022), the Outstanding Researcher Award (2021) by SVNIT Surat, and the Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Best Engineer Award (2021). Further testament to his exceptional achievements, he was elected as a Fellow of the Maharashtra Academy of Sciences in 2020 and was nominated for the coveted Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in 2020. Additionally, Dr. Sonawane is a Fellow of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) and the Indian Water Works Association (IWWA).
A dedicated mentor and educator, Dr. Sonawane has guided twelve doctoral scholars, nine of whom have successfully completed their PhDs, with one currently pursuing their research. He has also mentored more than fifty-five postgraduate and undergraduate students, nurturing a new generation of skilled researchers and engineers.

Dr. Sonawane’s contributions extend beyond academia through his active role in industry- academia collaborations. His expertise has been pivotal in solving real-world engineering problems in partnership with organizations such as NTPC and ISRO. His work in thermal management, environmental remediation, and sustainable technology development has provided practical, innovative, and scalable solutions to complex engineering challenges.
Recognized as a thought leader, Dr. Sonawane has delivered over one hundred and sixteen invited talks at distinguished national and international forums, where he has shared his deep insights into advanced topics in chemical engineering and materials science. His commitment to scientific dissemination is further reflected through his participation in fifty-two international and twenty-seven national conferences, solidifying his position as a leading figure in his field.

In addition to his research and academic roles, Dr. Sonawane serves the nation through his involvement in various academic and research committees. He has contributed as an expert and panel member for NITs and Union public service commissions, including state public service commissions UP-PSC, where he has played an instrumental role in advancing educational standards and policy development.
