About
Dr. Srinivas Dharavath is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur), where he joined in 2019. His research interests focus on organic chemistry, particularly energetic materials and medicinal chemistry. Srinivas developed an interest in chemistry during his undergraduate studies, driven by his fascination with small drug molecules and natural products. He completed his graduate and postgraduate studies at Osmania University, Hyderabad, and obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad, India. He subsequently carried out postdoctoral research at the University of Idaho, USA, with Prof. Jeann’e M. Shreeve, and at McMaster University, Canada, with Prof. Jakob Magolan.
During his first postdoctoral research at the University of Idaho, Srinivas synthesized various small heterocyclic molecules, with a particular focus on secondary energetic materials for defense applications. Several of these molecules continue to show potential as promising energetic materials. Srinivas aims to develop functional materials with potential real-world applications and societal impact. During his second postdoctoral research at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, he synthesized a variety of small heterocyclic molecules, with a particular focus on bioactive compounds for the screening of antibiotics, anticancer agents, and anti-obesity agents. Several of the newly synthesized molecules demonstrated promising potential for these applications.
Srinivas is passionate about teaching and enjoys his academic role in the Department of Chemistry at IIT Kanpur. He has published 39 research papers in reputed international journals based on his research conducted during his Ph.D., postdoctoral studies, and independent research at IIT Kanpur. He has also received an award from the Dr. K. V. Rao Scientific Society in recognition of his research contributions in PhD. In his independent career, he has received the Theme Chemistry award from Theme Journal and the P. K. Kelkar award for his research at IIT Kanpur. He also became a Fellow of the Telangana Academy of Science in 2025.
