About
Dr. Firoz Ahmad was a former postdoctoral researcher at Department of Physiological Sciences, Oklahoma center for Respiratory and Infectious Dieseases, Oklahoma State University, where his research focuses on host-pathogen interactions in the context of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. His current work investigates the role of iron metabolism and immune cell modulation in tuberculosis pathogenesis, with particular emphasis on macrophage infection biology. Through the use of both in vivo and in vitro infection models, Dr. Ahmad explores how iron homeostasis within immune cells influences the host response to infection, with the goal of identifying novel therapeutic strategies to enhance macrophage function and improve the outcome of tuberculosis treatment.
Prior to his postdoctoral research, Dr. Ahmad completed his PhD in Biochemistry at Integral University and CSJM University in India. His doctoral work focused on the activation of LAP (LC3-associated phagocytosis) through nano rifabutin loaded β-glucan particles, a strategy aimed at improving the intracellular killing of M. tuberculosis within human macrophages. This innovative approach seeks to leverage the host immune system's innate mechanisms to better target and eliminate the pathogen, offering a potential new paradigm in host-directed drug delivery systems for managing tuberculosis. His doctoral findings have been published in prestigious international journals, including the Journal of Biological Macromolecules and Nature, underscoring the significance of his contributions to the field.
Dr. Ahmad has a strong foundation in biochemistry, macrophage infection biology, and immunology, which underpins his current research into the development of host-directed therapies. His interdisciplinary approach integrates advanced techniques in infection biology, drug delivery systems, and immunometabolism to design innovative strategies aimed at improving the treatment of chronic infections such as tuberculosis. Dr. Ahmad is keenly intrested toward devlopement of the more effective and targeted therapeutic interventions against TB.
With a deep commitment to advancing host-directed therapeutic strategies, Dr. Ahmad is contributing to the development of therapies that enhance the host immune system’s ability to combat infectious diseases.
"Macrophages may ingest Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but they are not always able to kill it. The bacteria’s ability to evade death is a testament to the intricate war between host and pathogen"
