About

Dr. Karl-Stéphan Bouthillette is Assistant Professor at the Centre of Buddhist Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Hong Kong, where he contributes to the Buddhist Counselling programme. Previously, he was Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the Manipal Institute of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts (MISHA), Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), where he also founded and coordinated the Centre for Therapeutic Philosophy (CTP).

Originally from Québec, Canada, Dr. Karl-Stéphan Bouthillette has studied, taught, and conducted research across North America, Europe, and Asia. He earned his PhD in Indology from Ludwig Maximilians-Universität München and subsequently held postdoctoral fellowships at Ghent University (FWO Research Foundation – Flanders) and at Leiden University as Gonda Fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), in collaboration with the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS).

His research focuses on Indian philosophy, comparative philosophy, philosophy of religion, and therapeutic philosophy, with particular interests in yoga, Buddhist, Jaina, and Vedānta traditions, as well as intercultural approaches to philosophical counselling. He is the author of Dialogue and Doxography in Indian Philosophy (Routledge, 2020) and Metaphysics as Therapy (Springer, 2025). He served as host and principal organizer of the 58th Annual Conference of the Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy, held at MAHE in Manipal, India, in 2026.
