About

Dr Tapas Mitra is an experienced biomaterials and polymer scientist based at the University of Galway, Ireland. His research focuses on the design, synthesis, and translation of advanced polymeric biomaterials, with particular expertise in injectable hydrogels, cryogels, and shape-memory scaffolds for musculoskeletal repair and pain modulation. He has led the end-to-end development of biomaterial platforms, from molecular design and synthesis through purification, full physicochemical and mechanical characterisation, sterilisation strategy development, and preclinical readiness.

Dr Mitra has significant experience in translational research and medical device development, including scale-up, technology transfer, and regulatory-aligned process development for biopolymer-based systems. His work integrates polymer chemistry, materials characterisation (FTIR, NMR, HPLC, rheology, mechanical testing), and biological validation to address unmet clinical needs in osteoarthritis, chronic pain, and regenerative medicine. He actively collaborates with academic and industrial partners to advance laboratory innovations towards commercialisation and clinical impact.
