About

I, Dr. Prabhudas S Patel, am currently working as Professor & Head of Cancer Biology Department at the world’s renowned Institute, The Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute (GCRI) (gcriindia.org). GCRI is a State Cancer Institute located in Ahmedabad (Gujarat state) and one of the largest cancer care centers of India. The Institute is an amalgamation of specialties in surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, preventive oncology, pediatric oncology, neuro-oncology, gynec-oncology, radio-diagnosis and nuclear medicine, palliative medicine, laboratory and transfusion medicine, pathology, microbiology and other allied services. It has a dedicated Research Wing i.e. Cancer Biology Department which is exclusively involved in basic and clinical research, research training, educational courses and interdisciplinary advanced clinical services for patient management. Having a dream to contribute my insight in public wellbeing, I joined GCRI in 1981, acquired my PhD in Life science and followed my dream of contribution to the wide field of Cancer Biology.

My eloquent timeline has its own share of ups & downs, but as they say “When you have a start, you aim for journey not the end”. During my journey from a student to a Professor, the most exciting markers came in form of learning new emerging technologies in the field of cancer biology and in form of changes taking a leap form a typewriter to super computers, manual blood tests to automation. The nuts, and bolts of life science bounced from DNA to RNA to Gene transformations and to Sequencing; a large portion of the inventions for good to mankind. In this era of unhealthy world, when it takes strong steps in biological cycles of disease to correct their wrong mutations, to form breakthrough landmarks which today are only in hypothesis but will be history someday. The golden years of my scientific enrichment were at GCRI. The most striving steps of my learning journey were my initial and glorious 5 years at GCRI. It taught me essential scientific etiquettes which can never get old. This Institute gave me the useful pathway with necessary resources, not only that but the institution also acknowledged all my clever endeavors and enjoyed to prompt a few redresses which brought about many accomplishments, innovations along with over 140 scientific publications of international repute.

The major aim in my life has always been to drop clues and hints for the next generation to pick the ideas which are tousled in conjectural world of mine, so that the future can evolve. Few of the milestones of my professional journey could surely enlighten the budding ones. I believe that several noteworthy milestones of my life would always be the first steps; I had taken towards my reverie like: first presentation at national conference at IACR-1985, CRI (TATA), Mumbai; first scientific publication, the paper published in Tumori (988); first International Research Grant from AICR, UK (1996); first Overseas Research Appointment at UNMC, Omaha, NE, USA (1999); appointment as Ph.D. Guide (1999); responsibility to run GCRI/GCS Ethics Committee Secretariat (2001); organization of my first national conference - IACR (2001); starting M.Sc. in Cancer Biology Course - First of its kind in India (2013); Establishing “Glycosylation as a hallmark of cancer” at international level (2015); enplanement as NABH Assessor (2017) and several others which shaped my career.
