About
Ashwathi Muraleedharan is a Doctoral Candidate in the Department of Social Work at Rajagiri College of Social Sciences (Autonomous). Her research interests lie at the intersection of education, social work, and inclusive pedagogy, with a particular focus on the role of educators in supporting children with learning and behavioral disorders. She holds a postgraduate degree in social work, and her dissertation explored the critical contributions of teachers in fostering an inclusive learning environment for students with diverse needs. A former Teach for India Fellow (2012–2014), Ashwathi's teaching experience spans both low-income and international school settings, including a two-year tenure at an International Baccalaureate (IB) school in Mumbai. This practical experience has informed her academic work and her advocacy for integrating social work theory with educational practice. Her chapter in the edited volume Teaching and Teacher Education: South Asian Perspectives (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019) illustrates her approach to infusing social work methodologies into educational contexts, particularly for students with disabilities. Ashwathi was awarded the prestigious Government of India’s Junior Research Fellowship (UGC NET-JRF) in 2016, recognizing her scholarly potential. Her academic engagement extends to her role as a peer reviewer for leading journals such as Journal of School Choice and AERA Open. Additionally, she has been nominated as one of the educational innovation experts for the HundrED Academy in Finland and as the Faculty of UDL for Teach For All’s Global Academy, contributing her expertise to the global dialogue on educational reform and innovation.
