About

I am currently a full-time Senior Professor at University of Delhi. Research in my lab, Systematics Lab http://www.frogindia.org that I established in 2006, currently focuses on amphibian taxonomy, systematics, evolution, behaviour, and conservation. My lab maintains active research programmes in four globally recognised biodiversity hotspots: Western Ghats-Sri Lanka, Himalayas, Indo-Burma and Sundaland. Our focal research areas (proven with publications) include: taxonomy, systematics, molecular phylogenetics, evolution, biogeography, reproductive behaviour, developmental biology, bioacoustics, anatomy, and conservation. Our research employs multiple integrative approaches—external and internal morphology of adults and larvae, molecular phylogeny, bioacoustics, development, behaviour and associated phenotypic traits—to study amphibian diversity. To date, I have formally described 116 new amphibian taxa (2 families, 10 genera, 104 species) from India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia, published in top-tier journals such as Nature, making me count among a handful of herpetologists worldwide to achieve this distinction. These discoveries alone represent nearly 25% of India’s amphibian diversity. My contributions in the field of amphibian research and conservation have been recognized through several prestigious awards, including IUCN/ASG SABIN Award for the year 2008 (citation and 25,000 USD).
