About
Sharad Kumar Yadav is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Division of
Physical Science and Engineering at King Abdullah University of Science and
Technology (KAUST), Thuwal, Saudi Arabia, working on quantum sensing and
quantum communication. His current research centres on the design and
characterisation of cryo-compatible photonic chips and solid-state quantum
emitters.
He is currently developing a cryogenic measurement capability for quantum
sensing and communication, building and commissioning the optical, microwave,
and single-photon detection instrumentation required for optically detected
magnetic resonance (ODMR) on nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond. The platform
combines closed-cycle cryogenic operation with a superconducting vector field,
continuous-wave and pulsed ODMR protocols, and second-order autocorrelation
(g²) photon antibunching measurements for single-emitter verification.
He holds a B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering from
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University and an M.Tech in Electronics and
Communication Engineering from Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology,
Prayagraj, followed by an MSc in Electronic Engineering (Nanotechnology and
Renewable Energy) from the University of Surrey, United Kingdom, awarded with
distinction. He completed his PhD at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras
on ion transport through two-dimensional membranes and salinity-gradient
energy conversion.
Before joining KAUST in 2025, he was a National Post-doctoral Fellow at the
Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (2023–2025), where he combined FDTD
modelling in Ansys Lumerical with electron-beam lithography to develop
semiconductor quantum emitters. Earlier, as a Pre-doctoral Fellow at IIT
Madras, he synthesised 2D transition metal dichalcogenides by chemical vapour
deposition and fabricated nano- and micropores using focused ion beam and
femtosecond-laser techniques.
His expertise spans nanofabrication, full-device simulation, and optical
spectroscopy, including time-resolved photoluminescence, Raman spectroscopy,
and second-harmonic generation. He holds an Indian patent for an osmotic power
generation system, co-founded Blue FMa Pvt. Ltd. to commercialise
salinity-gradient energy, and received the NanoSparX Award at Bengaluru India
Nano 2020. He is an Early Career Member of Optica and a member of the IET,
RSC, and IOP.
