About

Stefanie Gil Franco completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Universidade Católica Portuguesa, developing the project “Between Difficult Heritages and Art Studios: Mapping Discourses and Practices on Art and Mental Health from a Transdisciplinary Perspective.”
Her academic background combines Social Sciences and Art History, culminating in a PhD awarded in 2019 by the Institute of Art History at Universidade NOVA de Lisboa. Her doctoral thesis "Os Imperativos da Arte: encontros com a loucura em Portugal do Século XX" [The Imperatives of Art: Encounters with Madness in 20th-Century Portugal] was subsequently published as a book in the Coleção Estudos de Museus series (Caleidoscópio).
A Master’s degree in Social Anthropology was obtained from the Universidade de São Paulo (FFLCH-USP, 2011), following a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences from FESPSP (2009).
Her research addresses the institutionalization of madness, difficult heritage, unstable archives, psychiatric nosographic practices, and the role of madness as a discursive element in art.

From 2019 to 2023, she served as a guest lecturer at the Department of Art History (FCSH-NOVA) and worked as a researcher at Banco de Arte Contemporânea - Maria da Graça Carmona e Costa (EGEAC) [Bank of Contemporary Art]
