About

Dr. Uma Mudenagudi is a Dean, Research and Development, KLETech University Hubballi, Professor
department of Electronics and Communication at BVB College of Engineering and Technology Hubli. She
received BE in Electronics and Communication Engineering from BEC Bagalkot, Karnataka University Dharwad
in 1989, MTech in Communications from the department of EE, IIT Bombay in1998 and PhD from the
department of CSE, IIT Delhi in 2007. Her areas of research are Machine learning, Computer Vision, Graphics,
Image and Video Analysis.
As dean Research and Development, she initiated a unique course called research experience for
undergraduate students to give research experience to UG students, capacity building projects for faculty to
provide an opportunity for faculty to establish facility in different areas and to carry out a research. She also
established center for assistive technology to cater to differently enabled section of society. She developed
Communicative Glove, which converts sign language into spoken words, which won number of awards in its 4+
years of development (Best Innovation 2012 from DST, Infymakers-2016, IESA best graduate awards 2016). She
guided more than 40 MTech projects and some of them have received best paper awards at national level. She
also guided many BE projects and 25 of them have won state level and 5 of them have won national level awards.
Currently she is guiding five PhD students and one graduated. She is principal investigator of several
collaborative research projects funded by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Naval Research Board
(NRB), DRDO, AICTE and VTU. Dr. Uma Mudenagudi is the winner of best PhD Thesis award from BITES
(Board for IT Education Standard), Government of Karnataka. She is program chair for NCVPRIPG 2011
(National conference on computer vision, pattern recognition, image processing and graphics) and is the tutorial
chair for NCVPRIPG 2015. She is a reviewer for many conferences and journals. She published about 80
reviewed technical papers in national/international journals and conference proceedings like TPAMI,
SIGGRAPH, SIGGRAPH-ASIA, ICCV, ACCV etc..
During her PhD period, she had an opportunity to discuss with the founders of Kritikal Solutions.
With that experience and motivation of enhancing the entrepreneurial mindset of young students, she
mentored set of students who were working on DST sponsored project “Indian Digital Heritage” to initiate two
student start-ups LabInApp and SnapTrude. One of the company LabInApp received 1 Crore funding in May
2015 and product is in more than 10,000 schools across India and signed up with most of education software
companies in India. Other company SnapTrude was a only company selected to be a part of the AI/ ML Featured
Pavilion at TechCrunch Disrupt San Francisco 2017. SnapTrdue received Axel funding, which funded facebook.
Only 3 companies are selected across the world to be a part of the AI/ML cohort. She is also mentoring a one
more start-up in the area of video analytics. She has given a large number of invited talks at different places in
Karnataka and at IIT Kanpur and visited Canada, Brazil, Japan, UAE to present papers.
