About
Dr. Abhinav Kumar is a Petroleum Engineer, an Industry Oriented Researcher and academician with a multidisciplinary approach to advancing sustainable upstream technologies. Currently serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Petroleum Engineering, School of Energy Technology at Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU), Gandhinagar, he brings over 2.5 years of post-Ph.D. academic experience and more than a decade of research engagement.
He earned his Ph.D. and M.Tech. in Petroleum Engineering from IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, and a B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from NERIST . His doctoral research, under the guidance of Prof. Vikas Mahto and Prof. V.P. Sharma, centered on the development of novel nano-reinforced preformed particle gels (R-PPGs) for water shut-off and conformance control applications. This work integrated advanced material synthesis, detailed rheological and morphological analysis, and core flooding experiments to address high water cut challenges in mature reservoirs. He also worked on ONGC-IOGPT-sponsored project targeting particle gel-based solutions for high-temperature carbonate formations.
Dr. Kumar’s broader research interests lie in:
#Water Shut-Off Technologies and Conformance Control
#Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR)
#Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS)
#AI/ML Applications in Reservoir Engineering
#Nanotechnology and Rheology of Viscoelastic Fluids
#Fluid-Rock-Brine Interactions in Porous Media
#Numerical Simulation using CMG (IMEX, GEM, STARS)
He has published in leading journals such as Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, Geoenergy Science and Engineering, and Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering. His experimental toolkit includes FTIR, PXRD, NMR, DLS, SEM, TGA, Rheometry, and core flooding units, reflecting a strong capability in both bench-scale experimentation and field-oriented simulation workflows.
Passionate about academic-industrial collaboration and digital innovation in energy systems, Dr. Kumar is actively exploring the integration of AI-driven reservoir analytics and smart production optimization frameworks. He is committed to addressing global energy challenges through cutting-edge research, student mentorship, and interdisciplinary engagement.
