Abhik Ghosh
UiT The Arctic University of Norway, University of California Riverside, University of Minnesota, Jadavpur University
About
Abhik Ghosh grew up in India and Sweden. He did his B. Sc. (Honours) in chemistry at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, and his Ph. D. at the University of Minnesota under the guidance of Paul G. Gassman, while also collaborating with Jan Almlöf. After postdoctoral stints with Lawrence Que Jr. and David Bocian, he joined UiT as Associate Professor in 1996, rising to full professor in 2000. He has been a Senior Fellow of the San Diego Supercomputer Center (1997-2004) and a Visiting Professor at the University of Auckland (on several occasions) and at the University of Rome Tor Vergata (2024-2025). Since 2021, he has led UiT’s Center for Sustainable STEM Education.
Abhik won a number of awards including (a) the PROSE Award in Mathematics and Physical Sciences (2015) for the textbook Arrow Pushing in Inorganic Chemistry, (b) the Hans Fischer Career Award for Lifetime Achievement in Porphyrin Chemistry (2022), and (c) the Olav Thon Prize for Outstanding Teaching (2024). He is an elected member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences, the Academia Borealis (The North-Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters), the European Academy of Sciences, and the Academia Europaea. He serves or has served on the editorial boards of Inorganic Chemistry, Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry, Journal of Biological Inorganic Chemistry, and Journal of Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines.
As a queer chemist, he has spearheaded several projects promoting diversity and inclusion in science. He is also an amateur Sanskrit scholar and a fluent speaker of the ancient language.
